”After leaving the cruise-ships in 2016, I decided that it was time to go back to Aruba, where I stumbled upon a black and white puppy dog that had an uncanny resemblance to Snoopy from the old cartoons.
I was renting a tiny house in Savaneta back then, which is like the country side,
in the southern part of Aruba.
During my first days there, I spotted this little puppy and he didn’t have an owner- he was just a stray dog that wandered about the neighborhood until the owner of the house that I was renting, started to take care of him. But the owner of that house didn’t take him in, so when I got there, I saw him hanging around in front of the house.
When I saw him, I took an immediate liking to him, for he was a pretty dog.
I noticed that he was full of fleas, but he was healthy otherwise.
His body was all white, mixed with black spots- a stray version of a dalmatian, with those big, brown, googley eyes staring at me.
Since he had no owner, I decided that I would take care of him as best as I could, with the help of the owner of the house that I was renting.
We would give him leftover food that would otherwise be thrown away.
I allowed him to be around my house and in time, we became good friends.
He grew up very fast, and in no time he was a big, grown dog.
Everybody in the neighborhood became acquainted with him, and everyone called him Snoopy, for his looks matched Snoopy from the cartoons. Since he had no permanent house, he was free to go wherever he pleased and at the end of the day he would stop by my house to rest or to simply say hello.
In time, he made friends of his own and his party was quite diverse.
One of his friends was a fully beige-colored, long, weepy-haired dog.
The other one was a completely black dog with brown eyes.
And the last one was a white and brown mixed-color dog.
I would see them wandering around the neighborhood together like a team, which was something quite… unusual to see.
To me, he was just a regular dog, but as he grew up, I noticed that he was no regular dog at all- he demonstrated much intelligence for a mixed, stray dog.
When I was working downtown I had to catch the bus at a nearby stop,
which was a 5 minute walk at most.
Snoopy would wait for me in front of my door, and as I set off with my backpack, he would follow me down the road and when we reached the bus stop, he would sit down and patiently wait for the bus right besides me.
After I would enter the bus, I would always look back at him to see what he would do next, and it was always the same routine;
He would stand up and walk back home on his own.
The following sentences flooded my mind every time:
”How can a stray dog decide to walk with me to the bus station, then sit down beside me like a gentleman and wait patiently? Who told him to do that in such a systematic way?
I surely didn’t!”
However my stay in Aruba was an extremely difficult one and injustice followed me around like the sun that scorched the soil, and in time, I found myself living this same reality of his- the streets.
Without shelter or income, there was nothing I could provide for Snoopy,
so one day I simply told him goodbye and went on my way.
However two; destiny is as weird as it is complicated and I found shelter in a nearby construction site that belonged to the family of a close friend of mines that lived close.
While I was living by that construction site as well as working in it to earn my stay, Snoopy and his friends quickly caught up to me and they started visiting me.
Since Snoopy was known in the neighborhood, he was also acquainted with the owners of that construction site, who allowed him to wander around and make part of that whole context with no objections.
My stay was fairly short, but in that meantime Snoopy and his friends started to hang around too often by that street and a man that owned one of the corner houses started to look at him in a crooked way.
It was 7AM of a thursday and I was already up and working hard at that construction site. I noticed that Snoopy was nearby that corner house when the owner of it opened the gates to drive his car out of the garage, probably to set off for work.
As soon as the man was done pulling the car out, Snoopy started barking at him angrily and I simply didn’t understand why he did it.
The man was very stressed and he started shouting at me from a distance while I scraped the concrete walls of the house in that construction site.
I immediately stopped what I was doing to try and make sense of what that man was shouting about and as I crossed half the street, the man said to me:
”Are you the owner of this dog?!” followed by ”He’s hanging around here every day! This is a nice street and YOUR dog is busy ripping the garbage bags appart and making a mess!!!”
I noticed that the man was unreasonably angry, yet it was early in the morning and eventhough I was working hard, I was quite calm.
I replied to him and explained in an objective manner:
”Snoopy is a stray dog. He has no owner. I’ve been taking care of him as best as I can, but my situation is dire and I can do no more for him. He is free to go where he pleases-
he doesn’t have a home.”
As I spoke this to the man, it was as if everything I had just stated was in vain-
he snapped back at me immediately with:
”I don’t care! Get him out of here! He is YOUR dog, now get him OUT!
I’m going to call the dog pound for him!! They’ll take him down!”
I tried to explain it once more, in a calm manner still:
”Again, I am not his owner. Me and a few others around the neighborhood try to feed him and take care of him as best as we can, for he is a good dog, he is a very smart dog.
But alas, he has no home to go to.”
Again, it was as if nothing that I had just said made any difference, for the man ranted on before he took off in his big suv car:
”I’ll call the dog pound on this fucking dog! I give YOU until tomorrow to get this dog out of here or else THEY will take him out!!!”
I sighed and walked away, looking at Snoopy who watched the whole conversation from a distance, quiet and on his own.
I thought of everything that I possibly could do for him, but there was absolutely nothing I could do, so I spoke to the owners of the construction site and again- there was nothing that anybody could do for him.
I went in and proceeded to work and this whole situation stuck to my mind like glue:
”There’s nothing I can do! What to do? What to do?!”
Until a bright idea came to mind, but it wasn’t an easy decision to make:
”If I make Snoopy see me as an enemy, he will leave the street and he probably won’t come back. As long as he stays away from this street, he’ll be fine! He’ll lose me as a friend, but at least he’ll keep his life.”
A part of me died as I walked up to Snoopy to shoo him away:
”GO AWAY! MOVE! DON’T COME BACK HERE! STUPID DOG! GO! GO!!!”
But he wouldn’t go away, for he was used to me and I saw this massive confusion is his eyes, which made it worse. I wanted to cry so bad but I had to be strong for the both of us.
I kept on shouting at him and threatening to hit him to force him out of the street and as a last resort I picked up a broken piece of a wooden beam that was being used at that construction site and I threatened him with it, being as loud as I could about it and he eventually felt scared and left the street.
The rest of my day was absolute shit and I couldn’t help but think about that man and how cold he was and how I wanted to bash his skull in with my fists. I kept on thinking about everything that was going on in my life and in that dog’s life, looking at destiny itself as a heartless bitch just like that man.
But I had to proceed, my own life was at stake, so I ended the day and tried to sleep it out.
The next day which was a friday, was I up at 6 again, to do the same hard work once more yet I was not calm. I wasn’t able to sleep well and the first thing I did as I walked out of that unfinished construction site’s door was; to look at that corner house.
To my absolute surprise, Snoopy was staking that man’s house at that early hour already. But this time he was there with his entire group, as if a gang, and they were all barely sticking out of the thorny bushes, sitting down in different positions stealthily,
all patiently waiting for something.
Even if this was something strange to understand, I decided not to mind them,
for I couldn’t do anything about any of it anyway and I wasn’t going to force a group of dogs away.
So I just went on about my business and started my day of hard work by that construction site.
About 15 minutes after I started to work on the exterior of the site, I noticed the owner of the corner house opening his gate. He was leaving earlier than yesterday and he seemed to be in a rush.
In this rush, he opened the gate and took off with his car, leaving the gate wide open.
Immediately after he turned the street’s corner and disappeared from sight, Snoopy’s party crept into his garage and destroyed everything they could- they toppled a trash bin and ripped the bags therein, they toppled the palm planter and in less than 5 minutes, the garage which was also the entrance to that corner house, was an absolute mess.
My jaw dropped while I watched Snoopy and his gang destroy that man’s dignity by making that beautiful spanish-tiled floor look like a dump site.
Soon enough, they all ran away and that was that.
My mind stormed with questions about what I had just seen:
”What the hell? Since when do dogs have gangs? How are these weird dogs, each of a color, teaming up to attack this man’s property?! How did they draft this strategy of sneaking into the thorny bushes?! How in heaven did they all come to an AGREEMENT like that?!?!”
Nevertheless I knew that at the moment that the man would return to his house, he would immediately make assumptions and direct them to me. I was so certain of it that I decided to leave for the night and only come back the next day. So that’s what I did. I went out and only came back to the construction site the very next day.
It was a weird but calm saturday, there were no complaints at all.
Nobody rushed over to me- the corner house’s floor was clean, the palm planter was back at its place and it seemed to be a regular day like any other, so I kept on working like usual. But none of the dogs showed up around that area again and in a couple of weeks, I had to leave the construction site for good.
Time passed and as I walked around Savaneta, I saw the black dog with the brown eyes, the one with the mixed brown color and the beige, weepy-haired one.
But I never saw Snoopy again.
I made an inquiry of him, but nobody in that neighborhood saw him;
months passed and injustice kept following me around and I had to move from one place to another, until I left Savaneta and went to the north of the island.
Until this day, there are no news of Snoopy.
None of my friends or my acquaintances have ever spoken about him since that time.
Everyone had their own theories of what might’ve happened with him- maybe he was adoped by a good family; After all, he was a very intelligent dog. Some said that maybe he got lost and went to other neighborhoods. Others thought the same as I, that he was ultimately taken down by the dog pound due to the owner of the corner house…
…I guess the truth is, we’ll never know- but what I know is this:
I’ve never seen a stray dog receive no instructions, yet assembling his own gang and wreaking havoc. Nor have I ever seen a stray dog exhibit such a high level of intelligence, independence and companionship like Snoopy…
…Snoopy… the black and white dog from Savaneta.”
