Project Overview
Lion’s Museum is a grand-scale institutional project designed to serve as a cultural anchor for a metropolitan district. This multi-layered structure is organized into a rigorous tri-axial program: a dedicated public library in the East Wing, a cafeteria and administrative hub in the West Wing, and a subterranean expansion that extends the primary exhibition galleries deep below the entry level.
Design Philosophy
The philosophy for this museum is: The Pedestal of Culture.
By utilizing a massive, tiered grand staircase as the primary approach, the architecture forces a slow, ceremonial ascent into the space. The goal was to create a building that feels permanent and protective—a stone-heavy sanctuary for history, literature, and the arts.
Technical Achievement
- Neoclassical Colonnade: A manually aligned series of repetitive white arches that span the building’s primary facade, creating a rhythmic play of light and shadow across the upper gallery levels.
- Subterranean Expansion Logic: A complex manual excavation that doubles the museum’s footprint, allowing for light-sensitive galleries to exist below ground while maintaining a 100% symmetrical exterior profile.
- Programmatic Wing Symmetrics: Despite the vastly different functions of the East (Library) and West (Cafeteria) wings, the exterior facades are perfectly mirrored, preserving the building’s monumental unity.
