Project Overview
Daniel’s Dutch Coffee & Tea is a commercial project that serves as a personal homage to the architectural traditions of the Netherlands. This structure utilizes a half-timbered medieval aesthetic to create a warm environment. The design is centered around a split-level floor plan that integrates a sheltered glass atrium with an expansive, flower-lined outdoor terrace.
Design Philosophy
The philosophy for this project is: The Outside View.
By utilizing warm wood tones and traditional white-plaster infills, the architecture aims to evoke a sense of historical comfort and community. The goal was to shrink the scale of a commercial building to feel like a private, rustic residence—prioritizing human-scale interaction and Gezelligheid.
Technical Achievement
- The Half-Timbered Rhythms: Dark-wood framing across the entire exterior, ensuring that the Tudor-inspired geometry remains 100% symmetrical while defining the building’s silhouette.
- Botanical Perimeter Integration: A structured, low-wall garden system that wraps around the property, utilizing a rhythmic placement of roses and lavender to create a natural, fragrant buffer between the street and the terrace.
- Transparent Conservatory Logic: The central entrance features a high-ceilinged glass atrium, manually aligned to act as a “light well” that brightens the interior’s rustic wood textures.
